Meet the New SU President of OAU


After three years, the students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have elected executives to steer the affairs of their union.

The election produced a former chairman of Angola Hall, Ibikunle Isaac as president while Oladejo Grace was elected the vice-president of the union.

Others are Shittu Olatayo-Secretary General, Awode Louis-Assistant Secretary General, Bamidele Oludare-Public Relations Officer, Adesina Adewale-Director of Socials and Culture, Oludayo Damilola-Director of Sports, Awoyemi Omolayo-Financial Secretary and Ajewole Martins-Welfare Officer.

Ibikunle Isaac Motunrayo was born 25 years ago into the family of Mr and Mrs Ibikunle. He hails from Shagamu, Remo Kingdom, Ogun State. He had his primary and secondary education at Local Government Primary School One and at Methodist Comprehensive College, Shaganmu, respectively.

He represented his secondary school in so many competitions and won a lot of awards, both at the state and national levels. In acknowledgement of this uncommon feat, he was made the Social Prefect at the time.

He had a National Diploma (ND) in Mass communication at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta. During his days at MAPOLY, he was exposed to some courses on press freedom. This went a long way in fuelling his appetite for the study of Law. Consequently, in 2009, he applied to study Law at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, a programme he is currently at the verge of completing

Ibikunle has contributed immensely to the advancement of the Great Ife Students’ Union, right from his part-one days. He was an active member of the Press Committee of our dear union (2009/2010 academic session); executive chairman of Angola Hall (2010/2011 academic session); member of the Parliament (2010/2011 academic session); the convener of Concerned Constructive OAU Students (2012) and Visionary Crusaders’ Forum (2013), these are the pro-union pressure groups he constituted, whose activities contributed, in no small measure, to the speedy restoration of our union.

At the level of the Law Students’ Society, OAU, Ibikunle has also served in several capacities, for instance, he was a member of Academic & Welfare Committee of the Society; chairman Local Organizing Committee of Sir (Emeritus) Professor DA Ijalaye Annual Distinguished Personality Lecture & Golden Jubilee at the Bar.

Also, Ibikunle was a participant at the internationally reputable conference tagged International World-View, which was organized by the World-View International Group between 24-25 Nov., 2010, at the Labour House, Abuja. As a prolific writer of national and international repute, he has written on – International Human Right and Humanitarian Law (2013); Space Law (2012), and Land Law and Copyright Law (2014); Ibikunle has also written several articles for publication on national dailies, notably among which are – ASUU Strike: The Sense, Non-sense and The Law (published on different national dailies); Why I’ve Spent 21 Years in The University – Students’ Union Leader, Tony Fash (The Nation, October, 2010), etc.

The President-elect possesses membership of the following bodies: Law Students’ Society, OAU; Nigerian Red Cross Society, OAU Detachment; Equity Chambers; The Visionary Crusaders’ Forum; The Apostolic Church Students’ Fellowship of Nigeria (TACSFON), etc.

He was an ex-reporter & Feature-writer at the Nation newspaper, Lagos; a legal & research Intern at Grace Law Firm, Sagamu, Ogun State; the pioneer Secretary of the Independent Audit Committee, Law Students Society, OAU; a client in the 2012 Equity Chambers Inter-Varsities Client Counselling Competition, OAU; a winning-team-Equity-Chambers' lead counsel in the 2012 Dr Tunji Abayomi Intra-Faculty Moot Competition, OAU; a winning-team-OAU's Forensic Expert in the 2012 Wole Olanipekun’s (SAN) Inter-varsities Moot & Mock Competition, OAU; a winning-team-OAU's Counsel & Medical Expert in the 2013 Yusuf Ali’s (SAN) Inter-varsities Moot & Mock Competition, Unilorin; the qualified-team-OAU's lead counsel for the 2013 African Human Rights Moot Competition, University of Western Cape Town, South Africa; the winning-team-OAU's lead counsel at the 2014 Eyitayo Jegede’s (SAN) Debate & Moot Competition, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Ondo State; etc.

In recognition of his invaluable contributions, Ibikunle was nominated – The most influential student of the year (2014) by Association of Campus Journalists’ (ACJ) Oscar Award (2014). He was also a nominee for Tush Award (2013) – student leader category.
