Integrity – our most precious asset and the oxygen we need to blossom

From time to time it is good to reflect on our values as a business, not least because in today’s VUCA world, values are increasingly important in guiding our behaviour, our decisions and the way we operate and interact with others. This is why as a company we celebrate the ‘unsung heroes’ who epitomise the very best of our values and why we include reference to values in our personal development plans.

Here are The Results

Thank you so much for voting!
We were overwhelmed with the response from across the nation and diaspora. We received thousands of votes from our online & SMS polls. Here are some interesting points to note:
  1. We made sure to try and remove position bias by randomizing the order of pictures every time someone voted. That way, no candidate could claim they had a disadvantaged position in the poll
  2. There were votes from EVERY state in Nigeria
  3. Duplicate votes (where one person voted more than once) were disqualified
  4. Also, votes where the same person was chosen as Presidential & Vice-Presidential candidate were disqualified

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOBI RAPHAEL (PHOTOS)

"Happy Birthday" means much more
Than have a happy day.
Within these words lie lots of things
I never get to say.
It means you are special first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I'm proud of you.
But most of all, I guess it means
That I am thinking of you
on this very special day,
Happy Birthday.

How To Get Your CV To The Top Of The Pile

I have written in the past about the best way to get your covering letter noticed when it comes to applying for that dream job or promotion. This is a hugely important part of the application process; it is what initially piques the interest of any recruiter or hiring manager. But it is equally vital that your CV really sells you and your abilities.
I have seen thousands of CVs during the course of my career and there are always some common mistakes that candidates tend to make. There are also some absolutely brilliant examples of CVs that have done exactly what is required - convincing employers to bring them in for an interview. Here are some of my key tips:

Killings and Abductions In Our Country: Keeping Hope Alive-MD unilever

Dear Friends,

We are all aware of the recent killings (bomb blast in Abuja), (killing of 16 people in Wukari LGA of Taraba State), kidnappings (abduction of 100 children in Chibok, Borno State) etc.

These attacks come on the heels of many other attacks that have claimed the lives of countless Nigerians – in most cases, innocent citizens who may not have any interest in politics. We have all been shocked by the brazenness of the attacks -  College students murdered in their sleep, commuters bombed and killed in their numbers, and entire villages razed, leaving behind huge casualties.

This is indeed a challenging time for our country.

This is also a time to show solidarity with our fellow citizens especially the bereaved. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, classmates and neighbors of the affected people. We also empathize with our colleagues in parts of the country where these outrageous incidents are happening.

Even in light of the increasing frequency of attacks, we must resist the tendency to become desensitized by recurrent reports of rising death tolls. The body count must not become mere statistics to us. Once we begin to perceive the status quo as the ‘new normal’, then we would have allowed the prevailing circumstances to overwhelm the humanity in us.

Let’s continue to be security and safety conscious as we work and pray for a return of peace and normalcy to our country.

Hopefully, someday very soon, these attacks will cease, good will triumph over evil, and peace will return to our land.

Y.

Ladies, You Don’t Have To Tell Your Man Everything… Really
There’s something about love that makes your tongue loose and it’s common in females. You’re oh so in love and you just want to shout it from the top of Mount Everest. You want to tell everyone that cares (and a good number of people don’t) how much you love your man, how good he is to you and how willing you are to die for him.

Full text of Mr Frank Nweke Jnr’s Speech at the National Conference

Mr Chairman,

Thank you for the opportunity to offer my perspectives on the President’s speech of March 17, 2014.

I would like to describe that speech as perhaps one of the best of the Jonathan Presidency for its depth and import, its delivery and its potential to impact the course of our history as a nation.

#FreeCiaxonIbadan: My Short Stint at the SSS and the Hypocrisy of Activism – By @Obajeun

Welcome to the arid absurdity called Nigeria, our national theatre of hypocrisy. With an unrivaled pace, we are fast moving to the tarmac of departure where the soul of our nation might Rest In Peace.

I pray not. But history has a way of reoccurring when you don’t learn from it. In our own nation-state, history keeps serving us, but we are not always ready to eat. We have walked barefooted with history. We never learnt, we never moved. So Yusuf Onimisi aka @Ciaxon, was arrested/docked for 13 days by the SSS for sharing photos. He has been released. I will save you the known details.

What is wrong with this picture? I pity Nigeria..**SMH**

It's not the 'Live' instead of 'Leave'..that's too obvious...there's something else crazily wrong here..lol.

About the pic; a group of women last week held a peaceful protest in front of the NNPC HQ along Herbert Macaulay way in Abuja. They were expressing their support for embattled Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dieziani Alison-Madueke, who is currently involved in private jet scandal.

Dont you think this people are just ignorant and fake? I feel they were just paid to do this. Cant even spell well. SMH for Nigerians.

The Speech that Sets Delegates on Fire!

The Speech that Sets Delegates on Fire!

Since the commencement of debate on the President’s speech at the national conference, the chairman placed embargo on clapping.

However, that embargo was overturned after an electrifying speech by Alhaji Nurudeen Lemu from Niger State, a delegate representing the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

His speech attracted a standing ovation and thunderous applause from everyone.

Here is the transcript of the speech:

Alh. Nurudeen Lemu, a delegate from the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

As a delegate, and as a people representing people of faith in God from the Islamic perspective, one thing we believe is that God will protect the community that stands for justice, even if they are not Muslims; and God will not protect the community that goes contrary to justice, even if they call themselves Muslims.

God is not a religious bigot. He is not a male chauvinist. He is not an ethnocentric tribalist. God is not the oppressor of anyone. God is with those who care; those who want for others those things they want for themselves.

One tendency for people who claim to follow a religion is to slide into the position of believing that we are better than the others. We over-estimate our virtues and under-estimate the goodness in others. The tendency is for us to become spiritually arrogant; to forget that others are people like us.

There is always a tension between representing our religious communities or our ethnic communities and our loyalty to the virtues and values and teachings of our religion, even those lofty ideals of our ethnic groups.

It is our prayer that delegates will try and ensure that the spiritual strength we have in us will keep us from getting angry and allowing our bitterness from others to make us sail from justice. It is in this vein and as a delegate from the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, we condemn the murder of all Christians, we condemn the murder of all Muslims. Not because they are Christians or Muslims, but because they are human beings – creatures of God.

There is no compulsion in religion. We all own Nigeria. We all belong here. And we all have the right to self-determination. We should respect that right and do unto others what we will do unto ourselves.

There are many other countries that have ethnic and religious diversity far greater than what we have here in Nigeria. But something that distinguishes us from them, be it Singapore, United States, is that they have been able to respect the rule of law so that any bigot, any nepotic individual who tramples on the right of anyone, especially that of the minority, the rule of law will catch up with him. Satan will only find a hole if there is a crack in that rule of law.

Every ethnic group is an oppressed minority somewhere. Every group is a religious and ethnic minority somewhere. Every majority or settler is an indigene somewhere. In one way, we are all settlers; we just don’t remember where we came from or why we came.

But, ultimately, we are all visitors to this planet, from God we come and to Him we return. As Muslim delegates, we come in brotherhood, as brothers and friends to solve our common problems and not as adversaries.

We come against the exploitation of religion and religious sentiments. We come against stereotyping, stigmatizing and dehumanizing of each other. We come against the use of religion as a political decoy and as a distraction from the critical things that bedevil our nation.

I pray that at the end of this conference, we will all grow in our humanity and respect for each other.

However, that embargo was overturned after an electrifying speech by Alhaji Nurudeen Lemu from Niger State, a delegate representing the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

Sequel to my nomination as a National Conference delegate representing Outstanding Youth Role models in the ‘Other Youths Organisation’ list, I thought it expedient and proper to create a 12-member think-tank (TT) comprised of a crop of intelligent and exceptional youths to discuss and formulate a viable youth agenda for the National conference.

Nigeria Now Ahead Of UK In Internet Access

Nigeria Now Ahead Of UK In Internet Access
Nigeria has emerged one of the fastest growing countries in global information technology access, rising above United Kingdom (UK) in ranking. According to statistics released by market research and statistics specialists, digitXplus, the digital Unit of mediareachOMD Nigeria, the country has recorded a 200% growth in internet users between 2009 and 2013.

The figures also indicated that Nigeria, which tied at 55 million internet users with United Kingdom in 2012, took 14% leap garnering about 62.4 million internet users above UK with paltry increase of just two million (57 million) users in 2013.

The report, which was released in Lagos last week, quoted Euromonitor as its primary source. It analysed digital growth across the world from 2009 – 2013, indicating that digital users grew across the globe from 1.748 billion to 2.677 billion, representing a growth rate of 53% in the period.

Of these figures, emerging and developing countries took the lead in digital users over developed countries, growing from 1.011 billion users in 2009 to 1.834 billion users in 2013 as against developed countries growth rate of 737 million users in 2009 to just 843 million users in 2013.

The report further breaks digital users by region. While it recorded 68 per cent user growth rate for Asia Pacific region in the review period, it shows steady growth rate of 34 per cent in the Americas.

The report indicated that the whole of Europe managed 28 per cent growth in the period covered by the report, representing an increase in number of users in Europe from 436 million in 2009 to 559 million in 2013.

The Middle East and Africa region leads the other regions of the world in digital users’ growth with an encouraging 112 per cent growth rate. In just five years, the region more than double its number of internet users. The digital users of the region grew from 145 million users in 2009 to 308 million.

More importantly, the sub-Saharan Africa sub-region where Nigeria belongs experienced an astronomical 143 per cent growth moving from a paltry 61 million users in 2009 to 148 million users by 2013.

Between the years covered by the review/report, Nigeria maintained its lead in the growth number of internet users in Africa. The country moved from 30.9 million users in 2009 to a whopping 62.4 million users in 2013, representing 102 per cent growth rate. Egypt is second behind Nigeria with 39.7 million users in 2013 moving from its 19.5 million users recorded in 2009.

However, Nigeria’s lead in terms of volume can be said to be due to the country’s increasing awareness and adoption of digital and not as a result of swelling population.

I Have Not Left The APC, People Should Get Real And Stop Speculating – Femi Fani-Kayode

I Have Not Left The APC, People Should Get Real And Stop Speculating – Femi Fani-Kayode
I have not left the APC. If I ever choose to leave the party I will let the Nigerian public know and I will give my reasons. This has not happened. I was at the Villa the other day and what transpired there has been the subject of much online speculation. What I said to the media whilst there was very clear and I chose my words very carefully. Let those that are interested read those words in the newspapers rather than speculate. Other than that I will say no more on this matter until I am ready to do so.

A few days ago all the APC governors from the South West were in the State House where they held a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan. What they discussed has not been made public until now. Does that make them PDP governors? The Presidency belongs to every Nigerian irrespective of religious and political persuasions.

Again General Buhari was recently honoured by the same President Jonathan during the centenary celebration which the APC did not support. Does that mean he has joined the PDP?

Again the ongoing Federal Government confab has some APC chieftains participating in it despite the fact that the party is against it. Does that mean that they have left the APC? People should get real and stop speculating.

Meanwhile Biodun Ishola Ladepo wrote ”If I were Femi Fani-Kayode and my party planned to field a Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket, especially in the age of Boko Haram, I would bolt faster than Hussein Bolt”. I am glad that someone is seeing things clearly.

This is not about leaving parties but about principle. Let us hope that the leadership of the APC sees fit to clarify this matter at the soonest and assure us all that they will do no such thing. Their silence on the matter and their refusal to rule it out is simply fuelling more speculation and dissent from within. When I say this I am speaking for many within the party leadership who have chosen to remain silent for obvious reasons.

Day 11: Nigeria National Conference Plenary – Live Update

Good morning readers. We are here again at the National Judicial Institute, venue of the National Conference. As promised, we are here to bring you updates on what happens right inside the hallowed chamber.

13.54
Olusegun Osoba, started his contribution by praying in Islam and then reverted to the Christian prayer by saying, “In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
Mr. Osoba said he was out to preach for equity and peace. He said, “Governors are corrupt, but where are the contractors who got the contracts?. All the coups were planned by the military against the military and sponsored by contractors.” He said that civilians never orchestrated coups.
On the issue of rape, he said, “Mama Market, all those committing rape should be banned from holding public offices. We have already been castrated by nature”.
He said in the North, some of the states have been divided into three states while some of the places remained the way they have always been.
He ended his speech by May the grace of God and the Holly Spirit rest with you all now and forever. And the Chairman, called for Amen.

13.48
Ralph Osanaiye, a representative of retired police officers said insecurity started when government started giving security agencies obsolete equipment and tools. He blamed the political class for failing to fund security adequately, thereby openly creating opportunity to loot the country and cause instability. He said, “Mr. Chairman, they went ahead to remove the intelligence arm of the police and created the NSO. There is no police force that can perform well without a strong intelligence unit. They also removed the operations”.

13.44
Bede Opara said that the Federal Government has failed to pay PHCN long after the government said money had been released. He lamented that the situation was responsible for why many workers over-declare
their ages and would rather die in office. “Mr. Chairman, I want to say that if blue-blooded Nigerians are not punished for making the blood of other Nigerians red, we will continue to grapple with crisis,” he said.

13.42
Rose Onna spoke angrily against the huge funds wasted during the 2010 general elections. She noted that allowing presidential candidates to spend over one billion Naira during the 2010 election created room for monumental corruption in the electoral process. She said that the cost of running government in Nigeria was so high, saying that what the Presidency and the National Assembly used was higher than what was obtainable in any develop country.

13.39
Paul Omu said although the military has been blamed for the entire crisis in the country, he argued that all the regimes assisted by civilians. He said all the wars in the country have been caused by politicians and civilians. He said, “Mr. Chairman, 350 delegates have spoken in unison but that delegates should work towards on-bundling the constitution and the system of government in the country. I want to preach the gospel that there is enough for everybody’s needs in Nigeria.”

13.34
Amina Omoti, representing Muslim leaders joined other delegates in calling for fairness, equity and justice in the process of governance. She called for the tackling of corruption, national economy, structure of the government, resource control and local government autonomy. She said Muslim women are being molested everywhere especially section 38 empowers Nigerians to practice their religion. Said Children from Muslim children are forced to study Christianity in schools and prevented from learning Islamic religion.

13.28
Michael Olukoya, NLC representative said the foundation of the nation’s educational sector is faulty. He noted that majority of those in the hall benefited from public primary schools. He said, “Today, we have destroyed the public primary school. We have deprived the children of the poor the opportunity to go to school. In Benue teachers have been on strike for six months and nobody is talking. We now take our children to Ghana and other places. We have destroyed the schools where the poor of the poor are attending. Mr. Chairman, we must use this Conference to do something to change the way we run our primary schools which is the foundation of every form of education for our children.”

13.13
Johnson Oluata also said the problems of the country would be solved to a large extent, if corruption was tackled. He said as professionals, delegates should use their wealth of experience to proffer solutions to the nation’s many problems. He said the tax policy should be used to create jobs for youths and build a strong and vibrant economy. “We are not here to drink tea. We are professionals and we should use our expertise to help the nation solve some of its problems” he concluded.

13.12
Is-haq Oloyede said there was a possibility of politicians using the fault line to plunge the country into serious crisis. He said while Moslems will complain that there are minority in the Conference. He said out of Federal Government’s 26 nominees, 9 are from the South-South and that the ruling class was exploiting the people.

12.58
Ngozi Olejeme, a Federal Government delegate had called for the use of the Conference in shaping the destiny of Nigeria. “We must consciously identify things that would engender productiveness. The role of women and youths in nation building cannot be over-emphasized. I see a future were Nigerian women will be elected the president and governors.”

12.56
A delegate complained that the marginalization in the states was worse than what was happening at the federal level. He said that instead of building schools, governors use billions in security votes for frivolous things, saying running security votes is giving corruption a legal name. They decry the level of corruption in the country.

He also called for the return to regionalism or a modification of the presidential system to save the needs of the country. He argued that the excessive money involved in politics was responsible for youth restiveness in the country.

12.41

Olakunle Olaitan, a representative of the Trade Union Congress, said the 2014 budget was being panel-beaten and that the economy of the country worse than what they tell the public. He said if the Western economic formula was not working for the country, market women and traders from Ariariah and Onitsha markets to teach the economists how to run the economy.

12.24

Femi Okorumu, representing the South West, who headed the advisory committee for the conference said that Nigeria has never harbored liars, thieves and self-serving political leaders. He said the problems were caused by the military that destroyed the fabric of national ethics and values. Mr. Okorumu said the youths of the country are right to feel depressed and angry over the situation in the country.

He said if the country must return to development, every traces of military including the presidential system of government and the unitary government that is being used in the place of federalism.

“It is only in Nigeria that people could be killed and their farmland taken over by herdsmen” he said. He refereed to the situation in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State where herdsmen who have come to be referred to as unknown gunmen have almost whipped out the indigenes.

He also called for the separation of religion and the state, adding that religious worship places should not be located along highways, where worshipers block other road users during times of worship.

12.15

Okuniyi Wale said the Conference should not be turned into a workshop. He said the leadership of the Conference jumped the gun by setting up committees without debating the President’s speech. He said that the agitation of people of various parts of the country should be negotiated and settled. In his words, “I want to appeal to you Mr. Chairman, we have a solemn task and I want to beg of you that we use this opportunity very well and avoid rancor and pettiness”.

12.12

Kate Ogbadike said since everybody live in a body, the body theory should be used in building a united country. She advised that delegates should work as the different parts of the body so that it would arrive at the right decisions that would rebuild the country.

She called for restructuring of systems, to enable the enormous resources of the country to be used for interest of the country.

12.10

Gabriel Okoye, representing Nigerians in the Diaspora said there was no difference between those abroad and those back at home. “Every Nigerian wants free and fair election to be conducted in the country”, he said. He said a lot of them have written proposals for the development of the country’s economy just for them to be thrown inside some shelve. He said it was not possible to see Nigerians who would die for Nigeria but that Ibo people would die for Igbo cause. “Fellow delegates, Diaspora or home-based, we are all the same. We want the best the country,” he concluded.

Festus Okoye said, we should stop glamorizing the past as if the past is anything to go about. He said delegates have been talking too greatly about Obafemi Awolowo. Some delegates are displaced from their home due to insurgency, kidnapping and armed robbery. He said some people go to their villages but run back to sleep in hotels because of fear. He said these happen because Nigeria failed to develop a comprehensive security plan.

Ike Nwachukwu reacted to the allegation that he flogged a woman when he was military governor of Imo State.

In humility and clear expression of decorum, Mr. Nwachukwu said he comes from a family where people don’t raise their hands on women. He said he also has a strong military background where officers and men don’t raise their hands against women. Having occupied several positions in the Army, he argued that he has never raised his hands against any woman. He said he gave instructions for a commissioner to lock out late comers but never took it beyond that. “I have never raised my hands on any woman and will never do. This is to let all the women here and outside know that I am their very good friend and cannot do anything to hurt them. I just wanted to clear the air on the matter before the press takes it out of proportion.”

11.35

The rules of proceedings of the previous sitting has been adopted by the Conference.

10.58

Done with the announcement and comments and all the fretting about the media, the Conference has moved on to discuss the vote of the previous proceedings.

10.55

A female member suggested that the Conference starts meeting in an executive session where journalists will be cleared from the chamber for delegates to discuss freely and without fear of such issues being blown out of proportion.

10.52

Chairman of the Conference, Idris Kutigi said the secretariat should ensure that all payments to delegates go with relevant pay slips.

10.51

Welcome again the hallowed chamber of the National Conference. The plenary session has just started.
After the opening prayer, delegates were allowed to make complains and comment on issues affecting them. The issue of allowance was raised by one of the delegates but another immediately countered and asked that his colleague should be careful about discussing issues pertaining to welfare to avoid the press blowing the matter up.

You Don’t Have to be Good in Bed to Keep a Man – Opeyemi Akinkusote

To be honest, this article is more focused on female folks than male. Howbeit, a guy can learn one or two things to pass on to his sisters, female cousins or better still daughters.
It is a generally known fact that women are more emotional and full of empathy than men. This is one of the reasons why women generally seem to be better parents than fathers; because they can easily relate to the change in mood and behavioural pattern of their kids faster than a father who would have finished watching a game of soccer before noticing that one of his kids had been seated beside him all through the 90 minutes of the game.

Because women are more wired towards emotions, it is only “natural” that women can be and are indeed sentimental about most things they are emotionally connected to. That explains why a girl can suddenly burst into tears about not finding the pair of red pumps she had mentally planned she will wear with a sky blue dress for an interview. Even though she might have other pairs of red shoes, the very fact that she didn’t get to wear those exact red pumps is almost sufficient to alter her entire mood for the day, and if care isn’t taken, that day will start and end on a bad note for her.

Why The APC Cannot Afford A Muslim-Muslim Ticket – Femi Fani-Kayode @RealFFK

Why The APC Cannot Afford A Muslim-Muslim Ticket – Femi Fani-Kayode @RealFFK
All the clever rationalisations and justifications in the world for presenting a Muslim/Muslim ticket will not enable us to escape this ugly tag. As a matter of fact, they will simply confirm it. We have a lot of work to do in this respect and permit me to share just one of the things that we ought to do very quickly if we wish to avoid the consequences of our own folly.
We must go out of our way to redress the religious imbalance in our Interim National Executive where you have virtually ALL the KEY positions in the hands of Muslims, and where it is only the lesser positions that the Christians enjoy.

Too many Nigerians living in poverty –Jonathan

Y-Issue-4-GEJ

President Goodluck Jonathan says he will not celebrate the rebasing of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product which has seen Nigeria overtake South Africa as Africa’s biggest economy.

Justifying his resolve not to celebrate what he describes as the new “accurate picture” of the Nigerian economy, the President notes that “too many” Nigerians are living in poverty.

Writing on his Facebook page on Monday, Jonathan adds that the feat achieved after the rebasing of the nation’s GDP has yet to bring about “positive impact.”

According to Jonathan, his definition of the transformation which he promised Nigerians when he assumed office as President is still a “work-in-progress.”

Rebased GDP and Un-rebased Realities

Nigeria has earned a new badge of honour. Based on the figures from the rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) released yesterday, our country has edged out South Africa as Africa’s largest economy. Countries regularly rebase their GDP to measure changes in the size and the structure of their economies. Some countries do this every five years or less. However, the last year such was done in Nigeria was 1990, almost a quarter of a century ago, a time when the current high-growth sectors like Nollywood, music and telecoms were very marginal players or practically non-existent. This means that the magnitude and the texture of our economy have been under-measured for so long. Not anymore.
