Applying for the Mandela Washington Fellowship: Pitching yourself in the Personal Essay

YALI Network Logo
Whether you’re writing an essay to apply for admission to university, graduate school or the Mandela Washington Fellowship, your job is the same: demonstrating to the decision-makers that you’re the person to choose. That’s the essence of a “pitch,” whether in business meeting or a personal essay.
In the case of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, focusing on “how to write a personal essay is the most important,” according to Edward Monster, public affairs officer in Malawi who reviews applications for the Fellowship. “Too many applicants used the essays to describe ‘big-picture’ problems in their country or region,” said Monster, “but failed to describe exactly what they as individuals were doing to confront the specific challenges in their communities.”

Why going for Msc immediately after Bsc is a Bad Idea.

I was just about 8 yrs old when I decided I wanted to be a Mechanical Engineer. Thanks to my late uncle, Engineer Gboyega Odekunle. He came to our house for the first time then in Ibadan; he had this fine Peugeot salon car, brand new! I was stunned, it was my first time seeing a beautiful car; the one my dad had was “Datsun 180” I can be sure many don’t know what the Datsun car brand is. It was one rugged

ONE WAY TO KNOW THAT THE WORLD IS NOT FALLING APART

ONE WAY TO KNOW THAT THE WORLD IS NOT FALLING APART

I wake up every morning; I pick up my phone to check the time like Y'all do just immediately you wake up and from checking the time to telling yourself that “Let me even check what is happening on Twitter and Instagram” before you know it, you are deep into social media. Just before you scroll for a bit, you start reading news of how a man stabbed his brother because of N100; Man commits suicide; Kidnapping and ritual killings all around the country. These days, a lot of people look at the headlines and think: The world is falling apart.

While a lot of people look at the news these days and think that the world is falling apart. I have a different view. I think the world has never been better, more innovative, and more creative; in fact, more loving than it is now. Ecclezzia is on a mission to prove it.

Believing the world is not falling apart or getting better is not some “faith” view. Like some of you will think I am just saying it because I am trusting God, yes I do but it’s beyond that. It doesn’t mean you get complacent or ignore the world’s problems. It means we should be careful of the danger of the single story; not focusing on the grim on the media. Many awesome things are happening around the world like the teenage boy who launched a ministry to reach people for Christ, Daystar Christian Centre and other churches who supported and provided for children going back to school, like Gloria Maraji going on a trip to explore the beauty of Kenya; who knew Kenya was that beautiful- danger of a single story. Awesome beautiful stories like that abound in our world but our media won’t report it, they see no news in those. The reason is not farfetched- People rate bad news higher than good news; Bad news travels fast.

To kill a burning fire, what we do is cover the source of oxygen that fuels the fire. To kill the influence of bad news in our world is to counter the sources that fuel these bad news- The Media. What we need to do is to promote more of the good news and this will inspire much more people around the world to share their success stories; by this, bad news have no root to grow and spread because the good news has filled the air. The cycle continues and we have a better world.

For this reason, Ecclezzia.com was birthed, we believe Christianity should not be a side news as it seems to be, but the MAIN NEWS; Hence, our dedication and commitment to Christian reporting which cuts across Christian personalities, music ministers, writers, entertainment, events, lifestyle, news among others.

Let us change the narrative of our society to inspire, motivate and give us a sense of purpose to make our world a better place. I urge you all to share your success stories, your testimonies, and innovations in order to give the world HOPE, FAITH and LOVE.
