The First day of a Corper in Camp.. Enjoy!!!

#Day1

First day was stressful and eventful starting from the early waking at 5am at my house, preparing to travel on a 2hrs journey from Ibadan to Iseyin. Traveling with my friend Ope Jaiyeoba didn't make it boring. Riding on a fairly rough road, the journey seemed forever but cool because we met other corp members in the bus forming like we have known each other somewhere before.

Anyways let’s go to the camp venue, the bus got to a particular road, untarred and dusty, we saw soldiers, policemen, civil defense men. Yeah, I knew we had gotten to the camp venue; all of a sudden they stopped the bus driver to get us down. On getting down, the soldiers asked all of us to carry our bags on our heads, I was not really shocked, was expecting it though but what surprised me was that we had not even gotten to the main entrance at that point, the gate was still a bit far. So we had to carry our bags on our head whether heavy or light it was. The annoying thing was that we were asked to “double up” which mean we should run. How can you run for a long distance with heavy bags on your head? Stressful mehn! I almost cried but I had to form hard guy because ladies had to do the same too. Anyways my advice for next prospective corp members is that “Do not bring heavy bags to camp”. Along the road, there were old women trying to help us carry our bags, just a way to advertise themselves so you can patronize them whenever you want to wash or do anything during the camp period.

Story surrounding Oyedepo's prayer for President Jonathan is False- Winners Chapel

After the controversy surrounding president Jonathan's visit to the Living Faith Church last Sunday, the church has issued a release, slamming the rumours as false 

Our attention has been drawn to a statement credited to the President and founder of the Living Faith Church worldwide, also Known as Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, which has gone viral.

 He was reported to have made the statement last Sunday when the President of the federal republic of NIGERIA, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan came to worship at Faith Tabernacle, which is the headquarters of the ministry.

The falsehood that is being spread around by mischief makers is that the Bishop, while praying for the President, said,

 “I will open the gates of hell to anyone who oppose you.” A little later, some others who in an attempt to “defend” the Bishop, came up with another quote purportedly said by Dr. Oyedepo, which is: “I will open the gates of hell to those who oppose the peace of this nation.”

Well, let’s set the records straight: The Press and Publicity Unit of the church, publishers of Faith Tabernacle News, was at the 3rd service and recorded (on tape), the President’s 6-minute speech, the congregational prayer for him and the Bishop’s blessing on the President.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the presidential candidate of the ruling party – the PDP, came to the church as the President of this country, not as a candidate in the forthcoming elections. And Bishop Oyedepo prayed for him, as instructed in the Bible book of 1 Timothy 2:1-2, as the President of NIGERIA not as a PDP standard-bearer.

Soludo, Fayemi and Fani-Kayode: My Takeaway By Iyabo Obasanjo

Professor Soludo’s article on the elections in NIGERIA is the best writing I have read recently on the real situation politically and economically in Nigeria.

The well-articulated response from Dr. Fayemi compared to the abuse infused response from Femi Fani-Kayode on the PDP side is a great example of the contrast of the status-quo compared to the alternative.

Whatever the case and I don’t expect miracles form APC but right now they have more thinking people than the PDP.  As a Yoruba person, Dr. Fayemi’s response is how we expect our educated elite to take up issues and not the mad ranting’s of Fani-Kayode.

I agree with most of his premise but I do not think they (APC) can take up a massive public works program in a period of “famine” i.e. low oil PRICES.

During the great depression when Roosevelt used public works to help provide jobs, it was the stock market that failed i.e. Government revenue was affected from tax income but income from exportation which was then mainly agricultural goods was not affected.

The best part of Dr. Fayemi’s response is that it is not elite focused.  Nigerian governance as I saw it was not a democracy but an elitocracy.  Govt of the elite by the elite for the elite and even if you grew up in near death poverty once you left those circumstances you forgot where you came from and concentrated on YOUR immediate family and matters affecting the wellbeing of the elite.The government could use money from its coffers to create jobs and provide skills and training, which people could then use in the private sector.

Changing this perspective to make the elite understand that their wellbeing was in fact dependent on the wellbeing of the masses will be APC’s challenge.

 They are sourcing from the same pool of elite talent that every Nigerian government has to source from and it is this pool that essentially has to be different or we will find ourselves again at precipice as usual.

We commend Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s for his insightful and incisive article published on January 26th in the Vanguard Newspaper, The Nation Newspaper and major online news platforms under the above title. We agree with Professor Soludo that if the political parties, including ours, must justify the overwhelming enthusiasm of Nigerians about the 2015 elections we must remain focused on the issues that matter most to them, which is the progress of our country and the well being of our people. While we accept his critical comments on our party, more for the intentions than for the letters, we believe some clarifications would be quite necessary. We wish to emphasise that our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), presents a real option to Nigerians. Professor Soludo expressed the sentiments of most Nigerians when he spoke about the incalculable damage that the PDP under President Jonathan has done to the Nigerian economy and the unprecedented hardship that his six years of the locust has brought upon Nigerians.
